We are delighted every year to be heavily involved with the Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition, which takes place every July during the famous Jazz festival. Established in 2003, the competition seeks to encourage up-and-coming vocal talents from all around the world, irrespective of background, and Shure has been the headline sponsor from the beginning. In addition to the international recognition that comes with winning, the three lucky finalists get to share Shure prizes worth a total of 10 thousand Euros!
This year’s competition is already well underway. 164 entrants from more than 40 countries entered before the closing date on March 1st this year — 60 percent up on last year — and already the competition jury from the Montreux Vevey Riviera Conservatory, presided over this year by the Grammy-winning Beninese singer/songwriter Angélique Kidjo, have, with great difficulty, pared this number down to 10 semi-finalists, hailing from countries as diverse as France, Turkey, Russia and South Korea.
The final stages of this year’s competition will be held July 8th & 9th, at the Petit Théâtre at the Montreux Palace Hotel. At the semi-final on the 8th, the three finalists will be chosen. On July 9th, these three finalists will perform again, and the winner will be announced at the competition final.
Like last year, Sabine Kuehlich, a former winner of the competition, will be backstage adding interesting facts and stories to this blog as the final stages of the competition take place. Additionally, you’ll find videos, stories and images from the backstage area of the festival. posted here to get you in the mood.
